Why IT Administrators Love Zoom

You get usage statistics, which include how many meetings have taken place, how many participants are in the meetings, and how many new users were on-boarded. You can also get usage reports for any particular period that interests you.

Reporting helps IT and executives understand their collaboration requirements and make better decisions to support them. If usage is higher in certain departments, executives can seek out drivers and business models to drive those across the broader organization for increased productivity and efficiency.

It works with H.323 hardware.

Aside from organizations that run consumer-level software, there are also many that still rely on older legacy hardware for their video meetings. Zoom deals with bottlenecking.

A bottlenecked connection happens when there are too many connection requests or too much data is flowing in or out of a line. Bottlenecking happens more commonly on extranet connections, although it can happen occasionally within an organization’s LAN. When communication is busiest, you’re likely to find one form or another of bottlenecking.

Despite their best efforts, IT departments may find themselves helpless in the most severe cases of bottlenecking. To help counteract the sudden drops in available bandwidth, they may try lowering the bandwidth priority on certain ports. Software-defined networking helps massively in this area, allowing them to precisely pinpoint problem areas and deal with them with a simple configuration. The IT department can’t always be there to save the day, though, and this results in massive failures when measures aren’t in place to deal with these bandwidth fluctuations.

In video communication, the video may stop transmitting briefly then resume when bandwidth is available. In milder connection bottlenecks, you may experience stuttering and micro-prolongation inside of the audio stream. This is perfectly normal, if you’re not using Zoom.

You see, while Zoom is busy being awesome, it’s also monitoring the available outbound and inbound bandwidth on each endpoint that’s using the software. When there is a normal level of available nominal bandwidth, Zoom sends video at the highest available resolution. As soon as the bandwidth level drops considerably, Zoom scales down your resolution to continue the transmission without trouble. The less it sends out, the more it’s likely to reach its destination on time.
