The University of Nevada Las Vegas Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach (The Center) is a program that helps various student populations in the Las Vegas area attain post-secondary education. The Center offers a variety of services to meet the needs of different age groups and goals. For example, TRiO Upward Bound prepares high school students for college by strengthening their academic skills and TRiO Adult Education Services assists adults in their pursuit of post-secondary education.
The Center has a noble goal – to help first generation students finish high school and get into college – and they have been very successful: 96% of the college-ready participants have entered or reentered postsecondary education.
The Center does, however, have a common challenge: communication. Their staff works throughout Las Vegas. Most spend at least four days a week at local schools working with teachers and students. They needed a platform to help them communicate easily and effectively. They also required an affordable solution as their program is funded by federal grants.
The Center started using Zoom Video Communications in May 2013 and have been very happy with our solution. We spoke with Ambu Yegappan, the Director for Information Technology at The Center, to learn more about how they use Zoom. Said Ambu, “Our primary use right now is for staff meetings since most of our staff are housed at the different middle and high schools. But we hope to use it in trainings and workshops for students in the future.”
The 30+ staff currently using Zoom love it. They appreciate its simple user interface and ability to share screens. Said Ambu, “With the many video conferencing solutions available, Zoom easily surpasses its competition! With its easy-to-use user interface, impeccable quality and reliability, and seamless integration with our conference room setups and mobile devices, Zoom gave The Center a platform that was simple and easily compatible. It is a great way for all levels of The Center’s employees, regardless of their location, to communicate internally.”
The Center plans to start using Zoom with students this coming fall, so we will check back with them to hear how the students like it!
