Zoom + Meta: The Future of AR Learning

Ever wondered what it would be like to dissect a virtual brain? Or look into the interior of a virtual Tesla?

That’s exactly what David Oh, head of developer relations at Meta, talks about in our new joint webinar. With the exciting new partnership between Meta and Zoom, users will be able to interact with realistic, 3D virtual holograms in real time through Zoom’s communications platform.

Founded in 2013, Meta is an AR (Augmented Reality) company looking to bring AR to many industries, particularly education, with their innovative product, the Meta 2 Headset. Meta’s AR capabilities will be incorporated into Zoom’s video communications services by the end of 2017. Both companies hope to bring 3D screen sharing and augmented reality to a wider audience and push the boundaries of modern communication.

Unlike a traditional virtual reality headset, which puts the user in an entirely virtual environment, the Meta 2 headset projects holograms onto the users field of vision, allowing the user to interact with both the real world and virtual holograms at the same time. This technology fits hand in glove with Zoom’s pre-existing communications services as it allows headset users to interact with a virtual environment while still maintaining crucial in-person communication factors such as eye contact, facial expressions, and body language.


Crucially, the 3D screen sharing feature on the Meta headset will allow any Zoom user who is connected to experience the same AR setting, even if they’re not wearing the headset, making this system usable at scale even at budget-conscious universities.

David Oh describes how this AR screen sharing technology will redefine communications in many industries: “Classrooms will be able to directly see their teacher interact with realistic anatomical models and gain first-hand experiences beyond anything they can learn from a textbook. Customers will be able to see and interact with virtual replicas of products they are interested in.”
